Disability Insurance

The purpose of disability insurance is to provide income in the event of an extended period of disability caused by accident or illness. MSU benefits-eligible employees can participate in an optional disability insurance plan that provides a base benefit for participants who become disabled.

The plan allows you to select the amount and terms of disability coverage desired to meet your individual income needs. Monthly benefits vary based upon the amount of salary you choose to protect. Rates vary depending upon length of waiting period, and other factors. Your benefits counselor can discuss these options with you.

Disability insurance is available through UNUM and American Fidelity Assurance Company and can be purchased within 31 days of your first day of employment, or during open enrollment each fall. The full premium cost is paid by the employee.

Pre-tax?

Though you may pre-tax long-term disability premiums, it is not recommended because of the tax consequences should you receive payment from this plan.
