Intermittent Employment
|
What is an intermittent employee? "Intermittent" means that the employee is appointed to a position that has sporadic work periods, such as parking attendants.
How much can an intermittent employee work? Not more than 1040 hours during the fiscal year.
Do intermittent employees contribute to PERS? Whereas, effective July 1, 1992, any employee employed on or after July 1, 1992, in a position in which he or she receives compensation for less than a total of 80 hours per month or a temporary or intermittent position of less than 4 and 1/2 months, or a position in which school personnel work for less than 1/2 of the normal working load and receive compensation for less than 1/2 of the normal compensation for the school academic year, shall not be, or become a member of the Public Employees’ Retirement System, except that any active member employed in such position on June 30, 1992, may continue as an active member so long as they are employed in such position.
If the individual is already in a covered position under PERS, either with the same or another covered agency, they are covered by PERS.
Can an intermittent employee's position be changed into a regular full-time or part-time position? Yes. To do this, the department follows the procedures for hiring Support Staff (to be posted externally).
Do Position Approval Request Forms remain active from one fiscal year to the next? No. All intermittent appointments must be requested anew each fiscal year.
