Information for New MSU Employees (New Hires)

New employees can use the online orientation to learn about MSU employee services and benefits. They may also chose to attend an orientation session through Human Resources Management and schedule a meeting with a benefits counselor as they explore benefits options.

Online orientation contains four basic sections:

  • The key policies section familiarizes employees with basics of MSU policies on harassment, drug-free campus, alcohol on campus, misuse of university assets, and use of computing and network resources. It also includes information on record of hours worked, dealing with work-related problems, inclement weather and emergencies, and workers’ compensation.

  • The section on taking care of business helps employees handle some of the business tasks required of new employees. It includes information on the MSU pay schedule, direct deposit, MSU employee identifiers and ID numbers, identification card, email accounts, vehicle registration, and campus transportation.

  • Exploring employee benefits provides basic information on both mandatory and optional benefits, with emphasis on enrollment deadlines and links to required applications. It includes a checklist that users are prompted to print and use as a guide as they move through the benefits options.

  • The final section, other options, includes information on financial services available to MSU employees, wellness options, the Nissan Vehicle Purchase Program, athletic tickets, and MSU facilities such as the Health Center, Golf Course, and Dining Services.

New hires should review all of the materials in the online orientation, plus additional benefits information on the HRM web site, then submit the requested information verifying their participation.

Deadlines for submitting key applications are included in the online orientation, along with links to forms.

To schedule an orientation session, or to schedule an appointment with a benefits counselor, contact Human Resources Management at 662 325-3713.

Information for MSU Departments

New employees have the option of using the online orientation and/or attending a traditional orientation session offered through HRM. Some employees may choose to attend an orientation session and use the online orientation as a follow-up resource. Also, employees are encouraged to meet with a benefits counselor if they need assistance with benefits options. Hiring departments can offer both options to their new hires.

The online orientation is designed to provide a consistent, convenient orientation that is readily available to all university new hires, as well as to current and prospective employees. The resource covers four broad areas: key policies and procedures; taking care of business; exploring employee benefits; and, additional options available to MSU employees.

The key policies section familiarizes employees with basics of MSU policies on harassment, drug-free campus, alcohol on campus, misuse of university assets, and use of computing and network resources. It also includes information on record of hours worked, dealing with work-related problems, inclement weather and emergencies, and workers’ compensation.

The section on taking care of business helps employees handle some of the business tasks required of new employees. It includes information on the MSU pay schedule, direct deposit, MSU employee identifiers and ID numbers, identification card, email accounts, vehicle registration, and campus transportation.

Exploring employee benefits provides basic information on both mandatory and optional benefits, with emphasis on enrollment deadlines and links to required applications. It includes a checklist that users are prompted to print and use as a guide as they move through the benefits options.

Although online orientation is designed as a tool for MSU new hires, it should prove a valuable resource for current and prospective employees. Current employees can visit the site any time as a source of information. Prospective employees can use the online orientation as they consider the total compensation package offered by MSU. HRM encourages hiring departments to communicate the availability of online orientation to final candidates for positions.

Online orientation can also help hiring departments facilitate orientation of their new hires. As soon as the new hire has accepted their offer of employment, the hiring department can process the new hire paperwork. Once the employee is processed

into Banner, they can begin to use onCampus resources to register their vehicle, set up email accounts, complete the paperwork for direct deposit, and complete benefits applications.

New hires will be asked to review all of the materials in the online orientation. At the end of the module, they will complete and submit a confirmation form that lets HRM know they have completed the orientation. New hires will continue to have the option of meeting with a benefits counselor and attending a new employee orientation session.

The human resources generalists will interact with the MSU units to provide resources to support the introduction of online new employee orientation.
